Community-run internet exchanges can cut Nepal’s bandwidth costs
Nepal’s internet users depend heavily on international connectivity, even when the websites, video platforms and online services they use are hosted close to home. When local networks exchange traffic through distant facilities, each gigabyte can create extra transit charges, congestion and dependence on overseas routes. A community-run internet exchange point (IXP) offers a practical way to keep more of that traffic within Nepal.

Reliable power, backup generators, battery systems, accurate route filtering, physical security and network monitoring are essential. Lower prices need the right commercial model
Peering can reduce payments to upstream transit providers, but those savings will not automatically reach households. A viable IXP therefore needs a pricing structure that covers operations without making participation unaffordable for small regional ISPs.
A modest connection fee, shared maintenance fund and transparent port charges can help. Development finance could support the initial switch fabric, route servers, training and regional access, while members gradually fund recurring operations. Public institutions and universities might contribute demand by placing selected services at the exchange, provided procurement and competition rules remain fair.

Cybersecurity deserves particular attention. Route hijacking, distributed denial-of-service attacks and compromised routers can disrupt many networks at once.
